Lake Bowen or Lake William C. Bowen is the largest lake in Spartanburg County encompassing 1,534 acres and 33 miles of shoreline. The water from the lake is formed by the South Pacolet River and managed by the Spartanburg Water system to serve as a public drinking water supply.

In the 1950s, Spartanburg County had seen a considerable increase in population. Due to the steadily increasing demand for water usage, Lake Bowen was constructed in 1960 to ensure an adequate water supply for the Spartanburg region.
